Protect family graves

To the editor,

A recent article in the Greer Citizen highlighted the need to protect and preserve historical cemeteries.  The Thomas/Edwards/Rush cemetery off Highway 101 includes at least three families and perhaps as many as 50 or more graves. There is a dispute between the seller/realtor and the buyer/developer about who knew or didn’t know about the cemetery. One thing is clear that many local residents were aware of the cemetery’s existence.

The land in and around the cemetery was first cleared with a bush hog and second with a bobcat. Graves were disturbed and cemetery markers and stones were pushed aside. It is also clear that additional, significant damage to graves and cemetery stones and markers has occurred within the last couple of months. Specifically, there is a 30-foot long pile of cemetery stones and markers that were pushed out of the immediate area of the cemetery by a bobcat. These need to be returned to the cemetery.

The cemetery needs to be protected, properly fenced and the cemetery stones and markers returned to the cemetery and where possible repaired.

These historical cemeteries are part of the history of our country and need to be preserved and protected for future generations.
