DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve owned and trained cats most of my adult life. Regarding your recent column on keeping cats off the counter: You’re right, of course, about training cats when they’re young. But felines are smart creatures, so even an old cat can learn new tricks.

Groups debate common core standards

A crowd gathered recently at Spartanburg County Council Chamber to hear from two organizations and their stances on Common Core, the controversial education standards.

South Carolina Education Association (SCEA) and South Carolina Parents (PIE) presented their sides – SCEA supports Common Core and SCPIE opposes them.

Unbearably adorable

With the 2014 season starting, Hollywild has some new additions to the animal park: three 8-week-old bear cubs.     

The Syrian brown bears, born to parents Giza and Ramses, came into the world Jan. 11. They will be hand-reared, a common practice, according to Kim Atchley, Hollywild marketing director.
