Should her coaching career go as well as her playing career, Lisa Jackson has a tremendous future.
The 2003 The Greer Citizen Female Basketball Player of the Year, Jackson also enjoyed a solid career at Erskine College. She averaged 15 points as a sophomore and 18 as a junior, and although injuries slowed her as a senior, she was tabbed as the Conference Carolinas Preseason Player of the Year.
Last week, Jackson was hired as an assistant coach for the Presbyterian College women's team by Ronny Fisher.
"I always knew that coaching was an option, but I didn't know where I fit in," Jackson said. "I did camps and refereed games, and that's when I realized how well I knew the game. I wanted to teach girls to be better than I ever was."
After graduating from Erskine in 2007, Jackson coached for one season at Queens College in Charlotte, N.C. She returned to Erskine to pursue a master's degree, and was hired as an assistant coach on the men's team.
"The men were really respectful and treated me like any other coach," Jackson said. "They knew that I knew the game of basketball, and that the coach (Mark Peeler) wasn't going to put just anyone on the staff.
"There are only a few differences in coaching men and women. With females, how they practice or play depends on the kind of day they are having. Guys give you 100 percent every time they come out on to the floor."
