Pink on their side
My hair is pink.
That's what Kathy Sawyer told her husband, David, over the phone after a recent hair appointment at Images Salon in Taylors. David didn't believe her so she told him again.
"It's only hair," he finally said.
Not only was Kathy's hair pink, but her sister Cindy Varlotta and mom Peg Volpe, joined her and dyed their hair pink.
Kathy decided to dye her hair because pink is the international color of breast cancer awareness.
"I woke up one morning and felt a little funny. I found it myself at the end of March. It felt just like a piece of gravel. By April 1, I was being tested and on Easter Monday, I was told I had breast cancer and it is invasive," Kathy said.
She has invasive ductal carcinoma and Kathy has already undergone a partial mastectomy. She began chemotherapy treatments last week.
"I've always approached everything in life with a sense of humor," Kathy said. Pointing to her breasts she added, "These are the cancer Nazis and we are going in and having D-Day every day. We are having fun kicking cancer Nazi butt."
Having her hair dyed pink wasn't something she would normally do. Kathy decided if she was going to lose her hair, she might as well have fun with it. Two neighbors have joined her as well with streaks of pink dyed into their hair. Her sister's grandson dyed his Mohawk pink.
"I've never been so pink in my life," Kathy said.
