The Marines of Greenville will host a meet and greet for local high school students on Saturday at 9 a.m. at 200 Patewood Drive.

The event is part of an effort to reach rising seniors, according to Marine Gunnery Sgt. Peter Lyons.

“It’s our job to look for young men and women who are qualified to serve in the Marines,” Lyons, who serves as a recruiter, said. “Every year, we’re going to invite all of the rising seniors, which would be this years’ juniors, to meet and greet with all the recruiters.”

The event will feature food, challenges and information on the Marine Corps.

“We’re going to have various competitions and we’re going to be giving prizes out,” Lyons said. “We’ll have things like a tire flip or a tug of war. We’ll tailor things more to the physical side of things, but we’ll also have some information on the Marines.”

This is the first year for the event, but Lyons hopes to make it an annual occurrence.

“We want these men and women to realize that they’re volunteering to serve their country,” he said. “That’s one of the things our country prides itself in. A lot of young people just aren’t aware of the benefits that are available to them in the Marines.”

The message at the meet and greet will be simple.

“Our big thing is, ‘Is your future important to you?’ We want people to be thinking about their future and the opportunities they have available to them,” Lyons said. “A lot of times young people just get in a rat race, so to speak, as opposed to having a specific plan laid out for themselves.”
