When Carolyn Greene’s nearly 20-year-old paulownia tree got too big for her backyard, she saw the glass as half-full. About 17 rings date the tree.

The tree was causing problems for the rest of her yard — limbs were hanging over the fence. It towered over other vegetation, hogging sunlight and water.
