Red Cross New Disaster
Volunteer Orientation

An orientation for new volunteers or people considering volunteering will be held on April 17 and June 19 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Spartanburg Office, 131 E. Main St., and May 6 and June 3 from 6-8 p.m. at the Greenville Office, 940 Grove Road.

When Carolyn Greene had to cut down a 20-year-old tree in her yard, she decided to get practical use out of it.

When Carolyn Greene’s nearly 20-year-old paulownia tree got too big for her backyard, she saw the glass as half-full. About 17 rings date the tree.

The tree was causing problems for the rest of her yard — limbs were hanging over the fence. It towered over other vegetation, hogging sunlight and water.

A brush fire that took firefighters two hours to extinguish left several local residents without homes in the Riverwood Farms subdivision last week.

After a tossed cigarette started a brush fire that destroyed two structures in the Riverwood Farms subdivision, community members, several emergency response and local organizations stepped up to help displaced individuals.
