Glassy Mountain Fire Department will hold an Open House on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

As part of Fire Prevention Week, the free event will include hands-on learning experiences, bounce houses, craft tables, and more.

A “Stop the Bleed” training exercise will be held at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Fire safety protocol gives people the ability to get out of a building promptly and safely in the event of a fire.

Today’s home fires burn faster than ever, making escape planning all the more critical to home fire safety. Studies show that in the past, people had approximately 17 minutes to escape a typical home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Now they may have as little as two minutes to get out safely.

A fire at home can cause fear and anxiety. When a fire breaks out at home, one’s initial reaction is to get oneself and one’s loved ones out of the house as quickly as possible. In such instances, the rush to get out of the house can sometimes cause families to forget their pets.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) suggests several steps for families to be prepare in case of a home fire.
