It had been a frustrating summer on the golf course for Derrick Oyervides. The Greer golfer has played well, but was not able to cash in with a victory.
A late-game pick six gave the Rebels their fifth region win of the season, as Byrnes topped Hillcrest 42-35 on the road last Friday.
The Rebels were trailing 21-19 heading into the fourth quarter.
After another Rams score, the Byrnes offense got to work, scoring three touchdowns in the final period.
Dre Williams and Quack Cohen will represent Greer at the 2018 Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas this December.
The Greer High seniors will be joined by Byrnes linebacker Deandre Cornish, representing South Carolina in the All-Star game.
Blue Ridge’s playoff hopes officially died last Friday, as the Tigers fell 43-18 at home against Travelers Rest.
With one game remaining, Blue Ridge has been mathematically eliminated from postseason contention, finishing at the bottom of the standings ahead of Berea.
Greer High planning alumni game
Greer High is planning a Baseball Alumni Game and Home Run Derby for Saturday, Oct. 27.
Eight former/current Yellow Jackets will compete in a Home Run Derby fundraiser at 2 p.m. A six-inning alumni game (odd vs even years) is scheduled for 4 p.m.
The Rebels ran into trouble last Friday night on the road at Dorman.
With a couple of slip-ups late, Byrnes picked up its second loss of the season to its cross town rival, and dropped to 4-1 in conference play.
The Eagles used a strong first half to power past Blue Ridge last Friday night at home, improving to 7-1 on the season.
Eastside is now tied with Greer for first place in the region, as the two schools get set to meet this week.
A difficult season did not get any better for Riverside last Friday, as the Warriors hosted Gaffney at the Reservation, falling 48-0.
The Indians piled on the points early and often, establishing a 41-0 lead by the fourth quarter.
