Blame Cannada

Wainstein

Heavy NCAA sanctions are looming for my North Carolina Tar Heels, but are they warranted?

Last week, Kenneth Wainstein released his lengthy report accusing university officials of setting up a “paper course” that helped athletes maintain eligibility for nearly 18 years.

No love for Kobe

If you needed one more reason to think there are a “bunch of idiots” working over at ESPN, here it comes…

Last week, the worldwide leader ranked Kobe Bryant the 40th (yep, you read that right…40th) best player in the NBA.

Won't be the same

Everybody has a morning routine, and Russ Cassell was a big part of mine.

Each day, I wake up, flip on the radio and begin the task of getting ready for work.

A win worth celebrating

Are they really going for two?”

That was the question everyone was asking last Thursday night at The Reservation as Riverside called a timeout with one play remaining in overtime.

A field goal would have tied the game. It would have been the safe call—the obvious call.

A fitting farewell

I’ll never forget where I was when Derek Jeter hit that walk-off base hit to end his career in Yankee Stadium.

I was on the couch…asleep.

It’s undeniable, I’m getting old and tired and it’s making me a bad sports fan.

The injury

I think I’m dying.

Well, I know I’m dying… but I think I’m dying sooner than expected.

A few weeks ago, while putting up a glorious new basketball hoop in my driveway, I bruised or broke a couple of ribs.

My wife, the football fan

A few weeks into the season and my wife has yet to renounce football. All signs say she’s getting close, but the day has not yet come.

I’m an avid football guy. I can be happy watching just about any form of the sport, but Shannon doesn’t get it.

And believe me, I’ve tried to explain it to her.

Remember

Thirteen years ago, our nation changed forever.

It blows my mind it has been that long. My wife, a fifth grade teacher, is currently teaching a group of kids that weren’t even alive when the World Trade Center buildings came crashing down on September 11, 2001.

It was a horrifying day. More than 2,700 people lost their lives.

Bad mojo

I owe you Gamecock fans an apology. It was my fault South Carolina performed so poorly last Thursday night in the season opener.

I feel bad.

This was a USC team with a lot of promise and an impressive preseason ranking. I ruined it.

Not made for TV

High school football is not made for television.

This past week, my wife and I made the hour-and-a-half trek to Rock Hill to soak in the first game of the high school season — Byrnes at Northwestern.
