All sewn up: Tailor shop closes doors
Joyce’s Shop, located on O’Neal Road in Greer, has closed after 40 years of service.
I became friends with Joyce Fowler in 1963. She was married to a good friend, Jimmy Fowler, whom I grew up with.
Jimmy’s family owned Fowlers Dry Cleaners in Pelham, South Carolina, and later moved to the business to Abel Drive in Greer. Jimmy operated the business for many years and Joyce handled alterations.
Later, Joyce opened an alteration shop in Greer, which was in business for 40 years. The shop was unique with antique sewing machines, many old-fashioned pieces on the walls, taking one back to an era we older folks knew.
It wasn’t just an alteration shop; it was a social hall where people enjoyed great conversation. We talked about our friends that had passed on, discussed changing times, laughing about times spent together of the years, and met knew friends.
My husband, Bill, and I would go to the shop and drop off clothing to be altered and I would tell him to wait a minute in the car [because] I would be right back. After several times, Bill said, “I am going in with you, for you will stay longer than a few minutes.”
We usually stayed an hour.
These times will be missed.
