Every day thousands of South Carolina law enforcement officers go to work to serve and protect the citizens of our great state. We are so accustomed to having them on duty in our communities that sometimes we neglect to adequately thank them.

Without a doubt, this has been a trying year for South Carolina. We have witnessed and experienced tough times - from the tragic killings at Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston that left our great state shaken to its core, to the recent floods that damaged many areas across the state.

“And so this is Christmas, and what have you done?”

These profound words were written by a British youngster many years ago. What have you done? When I ask that question many will say, “I contribute through my church” or “I write a check.”

I remember as a kid watching television on Christmas Eve as they “tracked” Santa and his progress making his annual trip down from the North Pole to deliver all the presents that good boys and girls were going to receive.
