Of the 1.4 million active military members, about 14.5 percent are women. Perhaps because of this, when I went to cover a military member’s surprise homecoming, I, along with many in my office, were surprised to find that the military person was in fact a female.

History escapes us constantly, whether it be through the elimination of century-old skill-sets, rendering certain industries irrelevant or by demolishing historic structures. Too often, we take our past for granted and fail to utilize opportunities to repurpose and preserve it.

With the Nov. 4 elections quickly approaching, I’ve stumbled into several conversations about candidates, over the top campaigns and whether voting really matters. Sure, voting can sometimes feel like choosing the lesser of two evils, but ultimately I’ve determined voting does in fact matter.

Cliché as it seems, I’ve always felt compelled to be impactful and deliberate in my actions, in turn leaving the world — even if only in a miniscule way — in a better state than it was in when I arrived.
