It’s been seven decades since Don Owens graduated from Greer High School, but he and several classmates still keep in touch.
The class of 1944 celebrated a milestone last week, holding its 70th reunion at Greer First Baptist Church.
For Owens, the class’ student body president, it was a time to reflect.
Donations continue to come in for the Daily Bread Ministries’ Shelter to Empower People (STEP), a rehabilitation homeless shelter set to break ground on East Poinsett Street on Oct. 1.
Most recently, D & D Motors has help, donating $10,000 to the shelter.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Both my dogs and my cat are terrified by thunderstorms, and they run, hide under furniture, and howl and yowl until the storm passes. How can I stop this behavior?
Angie Lewis didn’t take the typical route to become a teacher.
Lewis worked for 15 years in medical information in the Greenville Health System. She first got involved at Skyland Elementary through the PTA when her children attended.
“My journey was a little different than a normal classroom teacher,” she said.
Eastside High is preparing for its annual spirit week, kicking of Sept. 13 with breakfast at Broadway Bagels at 7:30 a.m.
Spirit Week also features a 5K, a golf tournament and several meals. This year, the school is trying to make spirit week a community event, said Bailey Hack, senior class president.

There are some teachers that make a lasting impact on students. That was the case for Flavius Hall Jr. and his first grade teacher Marion Coster (formerly Chesson).
Coster taught Hall first grade at Riverside Elementary in New Burn, North Carolina, in 1954 – it had been 60 years since they had spent time together.
