Bonds welders take state title again

Todd Varholy wants people to know he wants to make the J. Harley Bonds Career Center the best welding training facility in South Carolina, “whatever it takes.”

“I think we’re number one but I want everyone to know what my mission statement is,” Varholy said. “We’re number one. There is no ranking, but I want it to be known.”

The Bridwell family will travel to Washington, D.C. in late May for the Scripps National Spelling Bee, where Kalika will compete.

It is Kalika’s second time competing, but the seventh time the family has gone. Kalika’s older brother Zane competed when he was in eighth grade and her older sister Keiko competed fifth-eighth grade.

Give cats the carrot

A crowd gathered recently at Spartanburg County Council Chamber to hear from two organizations and their stances on Common Core, the controversial education standards.

South Carolina Education Association (SCEA) and South Carolina Parents (PIE) presented their sides – SCEA supports Common Core and SCPIE opposes them.
