Ruth Ann C. Tucker

Mrs. Ruth Ann Cogdell Tucker, 92, of Duncan, widow of Marshall Z. Tucker, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2023, at Spartanburg Medical Center.
The daughter of the late Fred A. and Ruth Vaughan Cogdell, Mrs. Tucker was born in the Monarch community of Union, South Carolina, on December 31, 1930. She was a 1949 graduate of Union High School and a 1953 graduate of Winthrop College. She was retired from Spartanburg County School District Five where she taught at District Five High School (1953-55) and James F. Byrnes High School (1955-1959; 1967-1986). Mrs. Tucker also taught at Spartanburg High School (1962-1967).
Mrs. Tucker united with Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, Union, upon her baptism in 1945. In 1956, the year of her marriage, she joined the First Baptist Church of Duncan. From 1960 until 2023, she taught Sunday School there. She also led a monthly Bible study for the church’s Baptist Women organization for many years, in addition to serving as choir member, Sunbeams and Mission Friends leader, and Vacation Bible School teacher.
Surviving are her son, Fredrick Tucker of Duncan; and five first cousins, James Vaughan, Anne Patrick, Joe Lawson, Donald Lawson, and Jodi Willingham. Mrs. Tucker was predeceased by her grandparents, Andrew and Jennie Cogdell, and William and Rhoda Vaughan.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 23, 2023, at the First Baptist Church of Duncan, conducted by Rev. James Shetley and Rev. John Swindler. Members of the Masie Barefoot Sunday School Class are asked to sit as a body. The family will receive friends Thursday at the church prior to the service, from noon until 1:45 p.m. The burial service will be private.
