Susanna Jeanes Howard, 81, went to be with the Lord on January 7, 2024. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to James G. Jeanes, M.D. and Joann Sawicz Jeanes (Lyman, S.C.).

Susanna's life was dedicated to God, her family, learning and teaching.

Growing up, Susanna was very active in the Girl Scouts. She earned the Curved Bar and over the years represented South Carolina at national and international events. She graduated from James F. Byrnes High School as Salutatorian, followed by Presbyterian College in 1965 with a B.S. in Chemistry. Later in her career, she earned a Master of Librarianship at the University of South Carolina (1988) and formed her own small business conducting on site chemical, patent and medical research for major corporations.

Susanna was a lifelong student of the Bible and attended many national and local theological conferences. Susanna and Jim’s membership at Trinity Fellowship Church has exceeded 50 years; she was a Sunday school teacher for many years. Together they founded two churches in Nicaragua in memory of their mothers and fathers, respectively, and traveled to Nicaragua to help build the first church.

The couple shared many other adventures together, including scuba diving, snowmobiling, ziplining, staying in treehouses and wildlife/nature observations at several national parks.

Besides her quest of knowledge in Christianity, Susanna was well studied in many other subjects such as wildlife, travel and gardening. She especially liked fragrant flowers and had scented plants blooming ten months of the year.

Because of her love of teaching, she often shared her knowledge, research, and skill with anyone who had a need or curiosity; for example, she spent over 50 years teaching children, adults and grandmothers how to swim.

Her two most beloved students were her son, Chad, and her only grandchild, Allie. With Chad, she shared a love of computers and technology. Throughout her time with both of them, Susanna ceaselessly taught them about many things, including God and the Bible and how to love reading and traveling. She demonstrated her faith for all to see on a daily basis, but most particularly during the health challenges that were more frequent in the recent years.

Susanna was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Kathryn "Kathy" Jeanes Sauvain.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years, James "Jim" C. Howard; her son, Chad Howard (Jane); her granddaughter, Allison "Allie" Elizabeth Howard; her sister, Dr. Christine Jeanes Davis (Tommy); her brother-in-law, Ted Sauvain; her close cousin, Bo Jeanes (Phalba); and many other loving extended family members.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 12, 2024 at Trinity Fellowship Church, 13232 Idlewild Rd, Matthews, NC. A Celebration of Susanna's Life will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 12, 2024.
