For the second consecutive year, Anderson senior guard Chandler Hash, a former Greer High standout, was named to the Capital One Academic All-District III men’s basketball first team for NCAA Division II.
Hash is the reigning South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete for men’s basketball and carries a 3.51 GPA, majoring in nursing.
The postseason awards keep coming for Byrnes senior quarterback Shuler Bentley.
Bentley was recently named to the 2014 Parade All-American honorable mention team, joining former Byrnes standouts Willy Korn and Marcus Lattimore, who were also recognized as Parade All-Americans.
Our office enjoyed a good laugh early last week pondering the thought of snow in Greer (something I didn’t even think was possible).
I thought it was ridiculous Gov. Nikki Haley ordered a “state of emergency,” and I certainly didn’t see the need for schools to close early.
Riverside
The Warriors are still searching for their first win of 2014 after losses to Boiling Springs and Wade Hampton last week.
Riverside is currently sitting on a 1-8 region record with just a few games remaining on the regular season schedule.
Byrnes
Several attempts at a Lady Rebels comeback were stifled by Gaffney Friday night, as Byrnes dropped a 66-56 contest to its rival.
Byrnes trailed by a double-digit margin for most of the game. The Lady Rebels cut the Gaffney lead to four twice, but were unable to get over the hump.
Courtney Robinson’s strong scoring night helped Blue Ridge cruise past Greenville last week.
The junior, who eclipsed 1,000 career points earlier this season, dropped 31 points and brought in 17 rebounds, earning The Greer Citizen and Clock/Clock Express’ Player of the Week honors.
Greer football awards ceremony is Monday
The Greer High football team will host an awards ceremony on Monday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium. Furman quarterback Reese Hannon will be the featured speaker.
I wasn’t going to write about Richard Sherman.
I didn’t think he deserved all the attention he attracted after his postgame rant in the NFC Championship. In my opinion, he said what most every passionate and competitive athlete would say if you stick a microphone in their face right after a huge win.
The final shot of the game was not drawn up for Blue Ridge’s Clay Arnold.
Tiger coach Ray Riley had no problem with the result, however.
Blue Ridge (4-9) stunned one of the region’s top teams, pulling out a 47-46 win over Eastside on the road as the clocked ticked down.
Eastside made it look easy against one of the region’s top teams.
The Lady Eagles avenged an earlier loss to Blue Ridge on Friday, dominating the Tigers in a 52-46 win.
Eastside coach Cindy DeHart said she thought her team played a complete game.
